Dutch Oven Potatoes au Gratin

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (russet or Yukon gold)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter


  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to create the creamy mixture.
  3. Grease the inside of your Dutch oven with a bit of butter.
  4. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes at the bottom of the Dutch oven.
  5. Sprinkle a layer of shredded cheddar cheese over the potatoes.
  6. Pour a portion of the creamy mixture over the cheese and potatoes, ensuring they are covered.
  7. Repeat the layers, alternating between potatoes, cheese, and the creamy mixture, until you’ve used up all the ingredients. Make sure to finish with a layer of cheese on top.
  8. Cut the remaining butter into small pieces and dot the top layer of cheese with the butter.
  9. Cover the Dutch oven with its lid.
  10. Place the Dutch oven in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-55 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Carefully remove the Dutch oven from the oven using heat-resistant gloves.
  12. Let the Potatoes au Gratin cool slightly before serving.
